This is a 100% true story, Internet. You're probably thinking "One of these guys probably just got lucky and didn't say anything." I wish that were the case, it would actually be pretty cool. Unfortunately, It happened on a night when no one was home and everyone was accounted for. Also, we know for a fact that they had not been there earlier in the day since people had been in and out of there. So where did they come from? It's a mystery. A very troublesome one. Jonathan in particular is bothered by it. Best we can figure, some drunken partier thought they were in their own place, realized they were not, and booked it without her underwear.

Also, Enjoy this bonus color strip just because I liked it so much.

Although at this point I have, if you assume Emery got eaten and not that he went to McDonald's or something, violently killed each of the main characters except Jonatron. Solomon really is allergic to cats. I found that out when I asked if anyone knew that we could have pets at our place. Our upstairs neighbors have a kitty, and there are some huge dogs roaming the complex sometimes. I don't know what'd happen if Solomon encountered one of them, but I imagine it is something like this.

Sorry, homies. There might be a comic later if I can swing it, but this is not a guarantee. I had to write a ten page page paper (with the works cited and interview stuff it actually came out to more like 21 pages @______@) as well as a midterm on Thursday and there simply was no time.

You guys know I hate to leave you hanging though so I'll see what I can do.

In the meantime, here are some things I've drawn and/or Illustratored lately that you might light to see. The one above is an old drawing of Wolverine I did.

This is the first real page of my new sketchbook. I was playing with some colors.

I want to do something more with this one, but for now it's just a very sketchy alien fight on some distant planet. Maybe I'll go back and ink it later.

Some of you might remember my Halloween costume from last year. I did a drawing of that once, and I liked the way it looked enough that I decided to try and refine the idea so I could turn in into a usable character. The above is one of those attempts, you see. I may try other things with the look. I have dubbed this character Donny Jonks, and this particular piece was done with pencil, ink, and Sharpie (hence the wierd texture in some places).

Speaking of old drawings of characters, I was messing with this old Adobe Illustrator image of Rosetta Stone to see if colors other than Green and Black might work better. I think I'll stick to my original design, but what do you all think? Is there one in particular one you like most? Feel free to comment.

And while we're on the subject of Bound characters, here's an unfinished piece that I referenced like 7 million Spider-Man pictures for. It's Rush on a building in the rain. If the white square confuses you, that's because it is a second panel that I have yet to draw out.I also need to clean it up some. I used pencil and ink for this one, and hoo boy, did it waste my pens. I really like how it came out though.

Anyway, I'll try and scratch out some sort of comic tonight. No promises, though. =\

Winter Clothing vs. Austin Weather

Whoops! Sorry this is going up so late in the day everyone! Believe it or not, I totally forgot about the comic. I finished it yesterday, but I forgot I was supposed to you know, update. < <

Anyway, it has been sufficiently cold enough for me to wear much of my non-t-shirt clothing around here. The chilly weather has lasted several days, which is unusual for Austin at this time of year. Normally we'd have a cold front roll through for a day and then we'd witness the return of the sun. I, like the fool I am, would believe it'd be cold for a few days at least, and would be prompted to grab that jacket or sweater that I bought in the summer and couldn't wear until now and then...disappointment. The sun would be out and it would be warm again.

So I'm enjoying the cold while I can. The first thing I did was grab one of my argyle sweaters. XD

What's this? Color? On a Thursday? I'm sensing a pattern here.

Sadly, this comic is one that may never see print. My editor said it was "too much of an endorsement for the paper" and that they could not run it. Which I can understand because yeah, if you read it then you'll see that it certainly does come off that way. Self-promotion was actually not my intent though. I was just calling it like I saw it. There's a chance that they'll still run it if I end the newspaper version at the second panel, but we'll see. The saddest part is that it is based on a 100% true story. This whole conversation really did take place. It was a while back when the first of our comic strips ran in the paper and we were newer to the game. The waitress, her name was Rebecca, was having a slow night and struck up a conversation about the paper. Jonathan shamelessly promoted us because Jonathan is the type to do such things when he cares about them. I think we made a fan that night.

And maybe I'm a little biased but even if Smoothie Home and tWC were not in the paper, I'd still laugh more on average after reading the comics page than I have in any of my previous years as a student here. I hope you all do too.

This comic strip is sort of a commentary on human interaction. It was inspired by my Youth and Social Media class, and is one of those cases where the characters are not necessarily themselves. They are doing and saying things they wouldn't normally do because they represent all people rather than just themselves.

While my roommates have been known to sit around staring at laptops for long durations of time, I am admittedly just as guilty. Also, they're not that likely to turn down food.

Has anyone ever told you this when you woke up in the morning? It's something my dad says to my sister all the time. The longer my hair gets though, the more I encounter this saying myself. Hair can do crazy things when you've been laying on it for hours. None of my roommates have ever actually said this to me, but I always did wonder "What if...?"

Rest assured, I am not a female Gorgon by morning and I will not turn you to stone at the mere sight of me.

The truest part of today's comic is the last panel. While I AM an awful dancer, I've never embarrassed Samantha in public like that. I'm much too shy for that sort of thing. The second panel usually goes the other way around. The character I'm playing rock band with there is my brother Zach (And our weenie dog Max) who you all haven't quite met yet. Normally we have to take the mic away from him.

This comic isn't meant to be so much funny as something you can relate to. I dunno about you, but I enjoy singing/dancing by myself every once in a while. =)

Sorry for the lack of a real comic today, Internet. It turns out that the Daily Texan accepted my work, but DIDNT BOTHER TO LET ME KNOW until a day before the deadline. I had to get my stuff together and send in some strips. I was originally planning to turn them down, but Sammy and Solomon (of Smoothie Home, also in the paper) and Jonathan talked me out of it. Today they ran the comic about working out, which is cool. Go me. Now I get paid six dollars a strip, so that's nice. I'll have spending money. It does mean some changes for the blog, though. =\

For example, I'm not supposed to post a new comic before it runs in the paper. Hence no comic today. Also, the paper alternates between a MWF and T-TH update schedule every week, so now we have to as well. It's a little wierd, I know, but there is a bright side. Now I am ahead on comics, so I can update first thing in the morning. You guys won't have to wait until the middle of the night whenever I finish anymore. =)

In the meantime, I have a lot of neat things I can show you. I did all sorts of drawing this weekend. Nothing fancy, just sketches.

That last one is Bears vs. Sharks on a Shark Train. Below is a collaboration drawing of kids pretending to be stuff. From left to right: Jonathan's, Mine, Sammy's, Liz's, Taylor's, and Solomon's.

Here are some gunslingers we drew. Solomon did the top one, and Sammy and I did the bottom ones. Sammy's is the girl, in case you're wondering.

These are the drawings of Cesar as a machine. It started because Solomon was drawing Cesar with a sword on his shoulder, at which point I suggested he give Cesar robot legs. The result was impressive, and many of us joined in. The order from top to bottom is:

It's Been A While Since I've Worked Out

So I started running again this work for the first time in almost a year. It's harder than I remember. I'm not saying I was incredible at it or anything, but I could at least get past the driveway.

It's been a crazy week, Internet. I didn't update on Wednesday because I was submitting my stuff the the Daily Texan to see if they were interested. In the end though, I decided I didn't want to do it after all and so I didn't submit any samples. It would have meant a change in the update schedule (MWF and then T-TH) and format use for stuff, and it didn't seem worth it. Solomon and Sammy, however, had their first installment of Smoothie Home run in the Daily Texan so if you are an Austinite you might like to check that out.
Also, we had some crazy thunder last night that knocked out our power and internet connection. Why does that matter? Because I had this comic finished hours ago and you guys could have been reading it by mid-afternoon if it hadn't happened. Instead, I had to wait until I got to CA to upload the strip, which means you had to wait too. Sorry, guys. XD

But here it is! We're back on track.

This is something I drew in a few spare moments, also unfinished. It's actually a drawn rehash of a character I created in a video game and really liked the look of. I made her a blatant Wolverine knock-off. Why? Well, you'll see. =)

This one is a 100% true story. A similar smoothie demon even burst forth from Solomon's guts exactly like that. That's what we get for making the theme of our second blended drink "Brown". The first one, however, turned out to be very delicious. Even Subhash (on the far left), who was our guinea pig, approved it. Here is the recipe, in case you are interested. It is mostly guesswork, but I figure if you play around with these ingredients you'll get something quite similar to us.

1/4 Red Delicious Apple
1 pint orange & vanilla sherbert
10 oz. 7UP
Approx. 5 oz. of Sparkiling
Pomegranate Fizzie
1 8 oz. can of pineapple slices
a handful of red seedless grapes

Try it at home, kids! (At your own risk)

The Apartment

This one is extremely rushed, but I didn't want to let you all down. This one aims less at the comedy side and more at a sense of pride we take when we realize that something has become ours. In this case, the ownership of our first apartment. I'm sure some of you out there who live on your own can relate.

You might notice that Emery is not in this one. (gasp!) That's because Solomon and Jonathan were actually the first ones to arrive at the apartment. They got here with nothing more than their mattresses and a few supplies. By the time I got here the apartment was mostly furnished, but here you can see them making the most of it by using a mattress as a make-shift couch and playing old emulators on a laptop.

First update in a while. Fear not though, dear Internet! I haven't forgotten you. I've just been moving in to my new (first!) apartment. It's been a tedious process and we don't have our interwebs set up. Before I moved in though, I went to visit Samantha and her family. This is a chronicling of one of the adventures we had.

It turns out Samantha's dad went to high school with the man who owns the most expensive longhorns in the U.S. And yes, he really was that shirtless and hairy when we met him. The longhorns are actually very impressive looking and not at all how I drew this one. I didn't know that they really are burnt orange and white. I now understand the logic behind my school's colors. The only thing that was kind of unappealing about these huge cows was the fact that they drool. A lot. And their drool kept managing to find Samantha's mom no matter where she moved.

Anyhow, this comic doesn't focus on the cows themselves. Instead, I chose to tell you about a rather awkward moment that happened right in the middle of conversation. The longhorn owner was telling me about his own time at UT and how he was forced to drop out. He said this in a very upbeat kind of way and I took it to mean that his grades must have sucked. I thought we were joking about it, so I laughed. Then in a sudden and very grave tone he informed me that it was because his dad died.

Needless to say, it was awkward.

I know some of you are wondering what happened to me between the last update and now, and have been asking questions like "What happened to updating MWF?"

The answer is: Nothing happened to the Monday, Wednesday, Friday schedule. Things will continue as planned, but we don't have internet in the new apartment (yet). So I have to do my blog posts using the free WiFi on campus for now. That's why it has been over a week since the last update. I was just moving in. Rest assured, there will be a the Wierdest City update for this Friday (Aug 28).

Today's post is a day early since I'm not gonna be around on Monday. I'm catching a bus up to go visit Samantha one more time before we go back to our respective universities. I'm sure you guys understand when I say that I'm really not working on any comic stuff while I'm with her. I'll be back Tuesday though, so Wednesday's update should be on time!

Anyhow, the character you see up there looks a lot like Mando, but it is actually someone totally different. This is a guy I work with named Leo. As it turns out, we both share a particular fondness for The Lion King (blatant rip-off though it may be). On Friday, I could hear from Leo's headphones that he was listening to I Just Can't Wait To Be King over his headphones. We pretty much spent the next few hours tossing quotes and lyrics back and forth. I thought it would make a great comic.

Smash it up.

In my household, this is the call that rings out whenever one of my friends wants to let us know that a battle of heroes is about to take place in the form of Super Smash Brothers. The two gentlemen featured alongside myself in this comic are Bobby and Mando. Bobby is the kind of person who becomes infused with unholy gaming skill via objects that don't make sense. For example, he believes being 1st player makes him better. He has claimed the 1st Player control in pretty much every round of any game we've ever played EVER. Is this superstitious? Probably, but he's really, really good. He has no problem telling you that he'll beat you with or without it, even if his control is broken. Still, he never plays 2nd. Also, he's got this terrible habit of staring at people impatiently when he wants them to do something instead of, you know, just saying what he wants.

I know the Wierdest City is supposed to be about living in Austin and "Keeping It Weird" and everything, but I don't move into my apartment for another week, so these first few focus on my friends from home. You'll see a lot more of the CA members once I get back.

Not Today, Heatwave.

Here in South Texas, we're going through a record-breaking heat wave. We have had triple digit weather every single day since summer "vacation" started. Sometimes the sun looks really friendly in drawings, but this behavior on Mr. Sun's part has convinced me that he is nothing short of a villain. I thought it would be an appropriate introduction to our time together, internet. While you can never go wrong with super powerful coconut-scented SPF 50+, this obviously is not exactly how my morning started. In truth, I don't know how to whistle.

This is the beginning of the Wierdest City. As you can see, it is not as colorful or detailed as my other comic The Bound, but it isn't supposed to be. This comic is just for fun, and is based on random ideas I have on random days. I wanted to do something nice for you all, since The Bound takes a much, much longer time to create since I've gotta write the chapters, organize the script, and color the pages. This way, you get some cool in-between stuff while you wait. And the Wierdest City will update on a MWF schedule, so be sure to check back every other day!

On a final note, Although tWC was my idea, I have roped several of the other Closet Artists into joining forces with me (namely Jorge and Cesar) which means that once we get our rhythm down we will probably alternate artists every time we update. It's kind of an experiment on our part, for the sake of practicing and learning. For the meantime though, the first few updates will be my doing while Jorge works on his pages. We hope you guys enjoy.

Okay, I created this blog to be a sort of hub for the stuff that I work on, and it is quickly becoming that.

I had hoped to launch the Wierdest City (misspelled purposely) by now, but I totally forgot that it wasn't possible yet. Alon, the master of the web over at the CA site, is out for another week. He's currently in Honduras helping people that need help and doing other generally good things. That's awesome and I can't hold it against him, so the comic uploads won't happen on the site until he gets back. However, the comic pages are written for specific days so I'm thinking I'll post them here on the blog in the meantime, and then when Alon gets back we move our shenanigans to the comics page.

It could not have been more than a month ago that I was telling my girlfriend Samantha that I didn't see myself as a blogger and would probably never have my own little slice of space on the web. It wasn't because I had anything against bloggers or blogging. Not at all. It's just that I personally never really thought I had anything to say that you, dear Internet, would want to hear about. The things I do on a daily basis can be pretty mundane.

Over the course of the last few weeks though, things have changed pretty drastically. I'm involved in multiple forms of internet babbling, I'm helping develop a game, I write and illustrate a web comic and I've got another one on the way. The first one is about super heroes. Can you guess what the second is about?

My life. As a college student. In Austin. Surprise, surprise.

Now then, it would be quite hypocritical of me to think that my life is cool enough to write comic strips about but not blog on. So here we go. =]

Just so I don't leave you hanging, here's a REALLY fast sketch I did. It contains three of my characters from The Bound: Amber Price, Wei Li Yang, and Jeremiah Clay. Wei Li is the fully colored one in the middle there. She won't come out until way down the line. Amber and Clay will be introduced in the next few pages though. If I ever get around to drawing them.
